User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is an alternative transmission protocol to TCP. Both rely on the Internet Protocol (IP). UDP provides port numbers to differentiate user requests and control mechanisms to ensure that the data has arrived. UDP is mainly used for the transmission of voice and audio data. While TCP sends lost data packets again, the UDP does not. When transmitting voice, the brain takes over filling in gaps.
